Scholarship

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter prides itself in being able to offer three different types of scholarships each year. The suggested requirements are listed below for those interested in applying or knowing more about them, selection is based on a composite of all the criteria listed below.

2016 Achievement Awards

Martin Luther King Jr. Impact Day Award – $500 (x2)
Awarded in January at the “Martin Luther King Day” Unity Breakfast

  • Undergraduate Soror currently enrolled in colleges with undergraduate chapters.
  • Undergraduate Soror with the highest GPA

LaRue Fredrick Undergraduate Achievement Award – $2,000 (x5)
Awarded in February at the Founder’s Day Luncheon

  • Undergraduate Soror currently enrolled in colleges with our five active undergraduate chapters
  • Application submission required
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and Essay

Black College Tour Award – $700 (x2)
Awarded in March at Chapter Meeting along with gifts presented

  • 10th and 11th Grade Students
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Student selected by college tour organizations:
    Omega Psi Phi Fraternity (2 students) and NEED (1 student)
  • Oral presentation and written essay by students at the June event

High School Student-HBCU Award – $1,500 (x2)
Awarded in June at Luncheone Meeting or Event

  • 12th Grade Student enrolled in Allegheny County Schools-Public, Charter, Private, Parochial
  • Application submission required
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Accepted and plans to attend a Historically Black College or University
  • Letters of recommendation, Activities, Community Service and Essay

Non-Traditional Student Award – $2,000 (x1)
Awarded in June at Luncheone Meeting or Event

  • Woman at least 30 years of age
  • Application submission required
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Letters of recommendation, Essay, Community Involvement
  • Acceptance or continuation letter from college or technical program

Scholarship recipients recognized at the Alpha Alpha Omega’s Annual Student Recognition Scholarship Awards Program in May or June of each year. Recipients are asked to attend this program along with their parents and other siblings.

PLEASE NOTE: The scholarship will be awarded after the student verifies enrollment in a post-secondary college or university (either 2nd or 4th year).

Scholarship Criteria:

*Preference is given to ethnic minority and/or underrepresented students.

*A graduating senior from a Allegheny County Schools-Public, Charter, Private, Parochial school

To apply, applicant must:

1. Complete and sign the scholarship application form

2. Secure parental signature if applicant is under 18 years of age

3. Write an essay based on application requirements

4. Submit a copy of his/her ACT or SAT scores

5. Submit an official high school transcript with an an official seal/stamp in a separate, sealed envelope

6. Submit an official professional photo (headshot)

7. Mail all information listed above to:
